Cloud virtual servers are increasingly used by clients to migrate business-critical applications, such as databases, ERP systems, heavily loaded web services, etc. However, often cloud providers cannot supply servers with sufficient capacity. Typically, cloud servers are low-powered, with few cores and limited RAM, using budget processors with clock speeds of 2.0–2.4 GHz, making it impossible to host high-load applications. Meanwhile, many applications, such as 1C:Enterprise, are very sensitive to CPU clock speed, and for optimal performance, processors with 3.0–3.5 GHz are recommended, which are hard to find in the cloud.

To provide businesses with high-performance cloud servers capable of handling any high-load application, LanCloud launched the Cloud Server platform based on the latest Intel Xeon Scalable processors. Each server includes 4x 18-core Intel Xeon Scalable Gold 6154 processors with a base frequency of 3.0 GHz, boosted up to 3.7 GHz with TurboBoost, 1536 GB RAM, 2x 10 Gbps LAN ports, 2x 16 Gbps SAN ports. Six different types of storage, including high-performance full-flash SSDs with read/write speeds of 1000 MB/s and 100,000 IOPS, are connected to servers via Fiber Channel.

Clients can now rent per virtual server:

  • 72 vCPU 3.0 @ 3.7 GHz
  • 1500 GB RAM
  • 64TB (or more) FC-SSD-RAID-10, 1000 MB/s, 100,000 IOPS
  • 10 GB LAN
  • 1 GB WAN

asci red5_800x600.jpg The performance of a single virtual server exceeds 2 TFLOPS — twice the performance of the American supercomputer ASCI Red, which from 1997 to 2000 topped the Top500 list of the world’s fastest supercomputers. ASCI Red consisted of 104 server racks over 230 m², housing 7,264 compute nodes with a total of 1,212 GB RAM. Its power consumption was approximately 1 MW.
Today, the performance of that supercomputer is available in just one virtual server in the LanCloud cloud.

The new Cloud Server virtual servers can be rented to run the most demanding applications, such as large databases, ERP systems, business analytics platforms, large-scale 1C:Enterprise deployments, terminal servers for thousands of users, and other solutions that standard cloud servers cannot handle.

Xeon E5 vs Xeon Scalable Gold Performance Comparison

Powerful Intel Xeon Scalable cores operate 20% faster than previous-generation Xeon E5/E7 at the same frequency and core count. Several comparative tests were conducted on the same virtual machine with 12 cores and 24 GB RAM on old virtual servers and our new Cloud Server platform based on Xeon Scalable:

As can be seen, even compared to the not-so-old Intel Xeon E5-2680 V3, the new platform based on Intel Xeon Scalable Gold 6154 delivers 50% higher performance using the same SSD FC Ultra storage. With maximum configurations, performance can exceed 30,000 points in CPU-Z, a record level, especially for cloud-accessible virtual servers.

Beyond performance, the second critical factor is ensuring the reliability of the cloud infrastructure, which LanCloud prioritizes. All virtual servers run on a highly available Hyper-V cluster, fully protected from any physical server failure. If one or more physical servers fail, all virtual servers automatically restart on other servers within 5–10 minutes. Virtual server disks are not stored on the physical servers themselves but on dedicated storage systems, with all disks arranged in fault-tolerant RAID arrays. Mainly, RAID-6 arrays are used, which can withstand the simultaneous failure of 2 disks. Storage systems include at least two disk controllers, each connected to two separate optical switches. Additionally, weekly free backups of all client virtual servers are performed, stored on separate storage systems.

All equipment is located in one of the largest and most reliable data centers, which is fully certified according to TIER-III (Design, Facility, and Operation). All equipment is powered by two different power supply beams simultaneously and connected to at least two communication channels. Thus, the LanCloud cloud infrastructure does not have a single point of failure, which allows us to provide a financial guarantee of SLA - 99.9%.
